Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Franklin International Flag Mall, followed by breakfast in the Richard A. Henson Center Ballroom, culminating in a Memorial March to Metropolitan United Methodist Church to kick-off the Church’s 125th Anniversary celebration.

Founders’ Week activities will begin with a return to our historic roots.  The congregation of Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne will welcome the UMES family in celebration of 125 years of service during their morning Worship Service. The University community is invited to attend. Guest minister is Rev. Theodore Day, pastor, Ebenezer UMC, Newark, DE.

Light Night

Starting at the Richard A. Henson Center, enjoy a guided walking tour around the historic Academic Oval; the celebration begins on the portico of the Richard A. Henson Center. Visit the featured buildings that frame the Academic Oval and witness history come to life as alumni and students bring to life Frederick Douglass, Richard Henson, John T. Williams, and others, as they tell the story of their life and the life of the buildings that honor their names. The celebration culminates on the lawn of the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts with a stirring oration of the founding of UMES.

Founders’ Week Convocation and Summer Commencement

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had its humble beginnings on September 13, 1886, as the Delaware Conference Academy (also known as Princess Anne Academy), which was initiated under the auspices of the Delaware Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Join students, staff, and faculty in their full academic regalia in the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts as the campus pays tribute to the founders of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore during the Founders’ Day Convocation and Summer Commencement Exercise. Our keynote speaker is Ms. Starletta DuPois, a UMES graduate.

Outdoor Concert and Fireworks

Enjoy a musical evening under the stars, packed with explosive excitement. You will be entertained by the soulful sounds of the UMES Gospel Choir, under the direction of Dr. Della Dameron-Johnson. The evening will conclude with a birthday salute to UMES under an amazing fireworks display. Be sure to bring your lounge chairs and stadium blankets, and camp out on the lawn of the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will move indoors to the Auditorium.
