PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is the Tom Joyner Foundation’s Historically Black College/University (HBCU) of the Month for August 2009.  A certified 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, the foundation was established for the sole purpose of  helping students continue their education at HBCUs as well as  to ensure the sustainability of the institutions.

The TJ Foundation is the brainchild and namesake of philanthropist and morning talk show host Tom Joyner.  Under his leadership, an intensive one-month national campaign will be launched on behalf of UMES and supported by the foundation’s corporate partners. UMES will rely on its alumni and friends from the past as it works in conjunction with the hardest working man in radio and his crew to forge a successful campaign.

The relationship between UMES and The TJ Foundation began in 2003 when UMES was designated HBCU of the Month for April of that year.  Donations to the university equaled 100 percent of the funds raised during regular broadcasts of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show.  Some $275,000 was raised, benefiting dozens of UMES students.  The 2009 campaign begins with a formal announcement from President Thelma B. Thompson.

For more information about the upcoming HBCU of the Month campaign, call Veronique Diriker, UMES director of development, at 410-651-8142.  For more information about the Tom Joyner Foundation, visit www.tomjoyner.com/foundation.
