PRINCESS ANNE, MD-University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s President Thelma B. Thompson has proclaimed June 15, 2010 as African American Golfers Hall of Fame Day at the university.

The designation comes in conjunction with UMES’ recent induction into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame (AAGHOF) as the recipient of the Founders Award.  UMES received the award for being the only Historically Black College and University to offer the PGA Professional Golf Management Program to its students.  Dr. Ernest Boger, chair of the UMES Hotel and Restaurant Management Department (in which the PGA Golf Management Program resides), was also appointed to serve as vice chairman, African American Collegiate & Youth Golfers Hall of Fame, by founder,  Malachi Knowles,  of the AAGHOF.

UMES will celebrate the day with the inaugural Junior Golf Tournament, also part of the Art Shell UMES Golf Classic.  According to organizers, more than 40 golfers between the ages of 11 to 18, will tee-off for 18 holes of golf at Great Hope Golf Course in Maryland’s Somerset County.  Awards will be presented following the tournament at the Legends Reception and Pairing Party for the Celebrity Golf Classic slated for Wednesday, June 16, at Great Hope.

The Junior Tournament follows a Junior Golf Summit on Monday, June 14, whereby young golfers and their parents can tour the university; learn about the university’s PGA program, which graduates Class A PGA professionals; and attend workshops, which address collegiate admission standards, financial aid and timelines and national ACT and SAT testing standards.

UMES launched its Professional Golf Management program in 2008.  The PGA of America authorized the program in 2007, and in 2009, the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management was accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Management.
