PRINCESS ANNE, MD-(Sept. 23, 2011) An expert in communications and international public policy will speak on Tues., Sept. 27, as part of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s International Development Lecture Series.
Angela Stephens is the development outreach and communications officer at the university assigned to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) program.
Her presentation, “Communicating USAID Foreign Assistance to the U.S. Public, Media and Congress,” takes place at 11 a.m. in the Student Services Center, multi-purpose room on campus.
Under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Stephens provides communications expertise to the USAID Office of Sudan Programs. Her work focuses on communicating the humanitarian and development assistance USAID is providing to Sudan from the American people. She will share how video, social media, and publications are used by USAID in this effort.
USAID is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The agency was created by executive order in 1961 when the Foreign Assistance Act was signed into law. Since that time, USAID has been lending assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty and engaging in democratic reforms.
Stephens holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from UCLA, a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California and a Master of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.
