In celebration of Black History Month, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s president, Dr. Juliette B. Bell, has called upon one of her favorites, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, for a free performance for the community.
The group, which performed at the President’s inauguration in April 2013, returns to campus Saturday, Feb. 25. The performance is part of “Young, Gifted & Black,” a two-year tour visiting the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
“One of my fondest memories of my time living and working in Ohio was my association with the Dayton Dance Co.,” Bell said. “I am honored they are returning to UMES to share their talent with our community.”
The 7 p.m. performance is preceded by a 6 p.m. reception, both in the university’s Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts. The program consists of seven pieces that “transcend human boundaries through contemporary dance,” said Debbie Blunden-Diggs, the dance company’s artistic director for the past decade.
The Dayton Dance Company of Ohio is in its 49th year performing works by renowned African-American choreographers, said Walter Woods, chair of UMES’ cultural affairs committee and coordinator for outreach and strategic initiatives. The dancers are a culturally diverse group who have won international acclaim for their artistry.
“We are pleased to present a cultural event of this caliber and hope that the public takes advantage of the free offering,” Woods said.
