PRINCESS ANNE, MD -Tea and Orchids, one of the many events taking place at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore during homecoming week, February 8-14, offers a unique opportunity for women in the community to share an afternoon tea with women at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Celebrating women of power, purpose and pizzazz, is the theme of this year’s event slated for Wednesday, February 11, at 3 p.m. in the Student Services Center. The event features a keynote speaker, live jazz, hors d oeuvres, door prizes and a silent auction.
The keynote speaker, Wilma Holmes-Tootle, is an educator, philanthropist and community leader from Freeport, N.Y. She worked her way through the education system from classroom teacher to high school dean of women, principal and director of personnel. A retired career educator, she is currently a consultant and community advocate.
A treat to the ears, solo jazz saxophonist Everett Spells will perform jazz standards, popular and original music from his CD at the tea. A native of Newport News, Spells plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophone. He has performed with musical greats Frank Foster, Billy Burgess Gardner, Consuella Moorhead, Bill Lee, Steve Wilson, Bill Drummon and the Wooten Brothers.
“Tea and orchids promises to be an event to empower and invigorate your mind, body, soul and philanthropic spirit,” said Kimberly Conway Dumpson, Esq., CFRE, director of Alumni Affairs and Planned Giving at UMES.
Tickets are $25 benefiting the UMES Foundation Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Educational Advancement through Technology Endowment. IRS rules provide for a tax deduction of the amount you contribute less the estimated value of the benefit you receive. The estimated value of benefit is $15 per person.
