PRINCESS ANNE, MD  Maryland Cooperative Extension (MCE) is offering a workshop for owners or managers of one to 10 acres who want to make the most of their property and help others do the same.  Whether or not you have forest on your land, this training will show how active stewardship can increase personal enjoyment and improve environmental quality.  The workshop will be held Wednesday, March 28, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Wicomico County Extension Office, 28647 Old Quantico Road, Salisbury, MD.

The training is based on a new manual, “The Woods in Your Backyard,” which is designed to help managers develop a plan to look at their property more critically, determine their objectives or goals for their property and develop a timetable of activities. It is designed for people who live on land that is forested or that has natural unmowed areas and for those who want to turn a mowed area into a natural unmowed one. Since assistance from public land managers is not available in most states to people in this situation, this workshop and new book will be important resources.   Workshop participants will be encouraged to take this information out to their community and spread the knowledge.

Nevin Dawson, Forest Stewardship Educator, will present the workshop. Enrollment is limited to 30 and pre-registration is required.  The cost of $15 per family includes one copy of the publication and companion CD-ROM, a $25 dollar value.  To register, send check or money order, payable to Maryland Cooperative Extension, to: Maryland Cooperative Extension, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 2122 Richard A. Henson Center, Princess Anne, MD, 21853, with a note indicating your interest in The Woods in Your Backyard Workshop.

This meeting is sponsored by MCE’s Maryland Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Project.  MCE programs are open to all citizens without regard to race, color, sex, disability, religion, age, political beliefs or national origin.  For more information, contact MCE at UMES: 410-651-6206 or by e-mail to hohudson@umes.edu.
