PRINCESS ANNE, MD – University of Maryland Eastern Shore junior Ryan Moore has been named a Hercules Scholar by the Tom Joyner Foundation. A pre-veterinarian studies student, he has been awarded $2,500.
Moore, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., is very active on campus and in the community. Throughout his academic career, he has consistently made the dean’s list. As a member of MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resource and Related Sciences), he works toward increasing the awareness of opportunities for minorities in the fields of agriculture, natural resources and related sciences. After completing his degree, Moore plans to pursue a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine and open a free clinic for animals.
Hercules Scholars are male students who serve as true ambassadors in their community. Additional requirements include a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and strong educational goals and aspirations for the future. Throughout the month of August, the Tom Joyner Foundation will award four to six such scholarships to deserving UMES students.
The Tom Joyner Foundation, www.blackamericaweb.com/foundation, has raised more than $25 million over the past seven years to help thousands of students at some 80 historically black colleges. Over the past month, it has presented more than $1 million to several colleges, including Harris Stowe College in St. Louis, Mo., LeMoyne Owen College in Memphis, Tenn., and Lane College in Jackson, Tenn.
