>PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Class of 2010 memorializes one of its own, fallen hawk Brielle Newland (1988-2007), with the first annual Brielle Newland Benefit Basketball Game on Monday, October 27, from 6 9 p.m. in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
While Newland’s life impacted many of her fellow students, her death impacted many more. “Brielle passed away in a fatal car accident while traveling back to UMES from her home,” said Simone Weldon, junior class president, UMES. “This saddened the UMES community as a whole, but had a deeper impact on the Class of 2010.”
Newland and three other students were involved in a five-car accident on September 3, 2007, as they travelled back to the university after the Labor Day holiday. Her untimely death paralyzed the campus community. Some 200 mourners, representing students, faculty and staff, attended a candlelight vigil held in her memory.
“Part of coping with death is remembering the one who died. We believe that there is no better way to honor her memory than to begin a scholarship in her name,” said Weldon.
Proceeds from the Brielle Newland Benefit Basketball Game will be applied to the spring 2009 semester bill of a deserving UMES student. Ticket prices are $5 for general admission and $3 for UMES students with an identification card.
