PRINCESS ANNE, MD — Senior Miles Hill, of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, was recently selected to attend an exclusive student leadership retreat held at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and at the National Conference Center at Lansdowne in Leesburg, VA.
Hill, 22, accompanied Dr. Chester Hedgepeth, director of the UMES African Language Research Project, for the weekend retreat themed “Global Concerns and Leadership Challenges.” A select group of student leaders and faculty advisors/counselors, who have demonstrated in their work and study a strong interest in international affairs and the importance of global concerns and ethics in leadership roles, were invited to participate.
“In administering the African Language Research Project, I am a strong believer in student research and in student involvement,” said Hedgepeth. “For this opportunity, Miles Hill was a logical choice.”
A sampling of expert speakers and group leaders guided discussion, panels and workshops on the conference theme. The two main objectives were to encourage students to examine and assert the role of ethics in their leadership roles and to consider public service, particularly Foreign Service, in their career aspirations.
“It was a great honor to be considered among America s best and brightest,” said Hill. “My experience at Howard’s international conference was memorable in that I had an opportunity to work with leaders of today as well as future leaders of tomorrow.”
Hill is a native of Baltimore and expects to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from UMES December 2008. He maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.1. His extracurricular activities include serving as vice president of the UMES Lions Club, a radio personality on Hawk radio, and a member and former board member of the National Association of Black Accountants.
