PRINCESS ANNE, MD – (May 24, 2011) – A free health-assessment and informational session is planned Thursday at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The event in the Student Services Center ballroom is a community service project of UMES’ first-year pharmacy students, who can answer questions on common health topics, including influenza, colorectal cancer screening and combating high blood pressure.

Blood pressure screening, body fat analysis and answers to questions about medications also will be part of free advice and services under the supervision of Dr. Miriam Purnell, UMES’ drug information center director.

Professor Jay Parmar, one of the organizers, says the event is an opportunity to get “to know your future pharmacists (who) may serve you in the Delmarva area.”  It also provides community residents a chance to discuss public health issues and explore healthy lifestyle strategies.
