Eastern Shore Fan Con descends on UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, MD-(April 24, 2012)The Eastern Shore Fan Con, a comic book convention and more, is coming to UMES April 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Student Services Center.

The event focuses on comic books, anime, video games and “all things geeky,” said organizers.

Special guests Greg LaRocque, Douglas Draper, and Buz Hasson & Ken Haeser will be on the scene to meet attendees.  LaRocque is best known for his work on “The Flash” and has worked for Marvel and DC comics, Draper on such titles as “Termites in Your Smile” and “The Phantom,” and Hasson and Haeser as co-creators of “The Living Corpse.”

In addition to special guests and exhibitors, the Fan Con will feature panel discussions on the hour, anime movies in a theater, video game tournaments and play areas, live music in a cafe, a costume contest and a live concert-after party after the show. The concert fee is separate and features artists “Insane Ian,” “My Parents Favorite Music,” “Middle Child Syndrome,” and “USUHI” starting at 8:15 p.m.

Eastern Shore Fan Con is presented by the university’s student group A.C.T.I.O.N. Anime with support from PLB Comics, an independent comic book publisher on the Shore led by two UMES alumni, Josh and Mathew Shockley.  Proceeds from ticket and table sales will help fund the student group’s trips, events and community outreach.

UMES has one of the only degreed sequential arts programs at a public university in the U.S., said Brad Hudson, instructor, Department of Fine Arts and catalyst for the program.
