We are nearing the end of another semester; and while graduation is an exciting time, our hearts are deeply saddened by the untimely and tragic death of one of our own.

Antwan Robert Johnson, 22, of Washington D.C. was pronounced deceased at the scene of a two-car accident that occurred early Sunday morning, May 10, at the intersection of Dr. William P. Hytche Boulevard and Beechwood Street in Princess Anne.

Emergency medical responders were dispatched within minutes of the accident, at which time it was determined that Mr. Johnson was deceased.  To clarify concerns about the process of handling a motor vehicle fatality, the following sequence of events occurred.

Immediately upon the determination of the fatality, a motor vehicle fatality investigation ensued.  For the motor vehicle investigation, it was required that the scene be protected and the medical examiner notified.  Upon the arrival of the medical examiner, a medical examiner s investigation was initiated.  Upon completion of the medical examiner’s investigation, a funeral director was contacted.  Upon the arrival of the funeral director, the deceased was released for recovery and transport to the state medical examiner’s office in Baltimore.

Around the same time, there was a traffic accident involving UMES students in Salisbury.  Three students were transported to the hospital.  One student was hospitalized and two others were treated and released.  For the hospitalized student, the prognosis for recovery is good.   For Antwan Johnson, a candlelight vigil will be held in his memory in the Student Services rotunda on Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m.

Because of the traumatic nature of these events, Counseling Services has extended its hours to 9 p.m. through Thursday, May 14.  Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to call 410-651-6449 for counseling support.  Administrators and staff are also available in the Student Services Center until 9 p.m. daily through Thursday, May 14.  On call counseling services are available and will continue to be available 24 hours a day through the end of the semester.  In addition, Residence Life staff will be available in the residence halls
