PRINCESS ANNE, MD-Homecoming 2008 at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is open not only to faculty, staff, students and the 1,800 alumni on the Lower Shore, but to the general public for several events.  The week-long celebration takes place Sunday, February 17, through Saturday, February 23.

The community is invited to attend the Gospel Extravaganza , the homecoming concert, President’s Prayer Breakfast, the homecoming pre-game party and basketball games.

Gospel artist Keith “Wonderboy” Johnson of “The Spirit Voices” kicks off the week’s activities along with the UMES Gospel Choir at the Gospel Extravaganza on Sunday, February 17, at 4 p.m. in the Ella Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center.  Tickets are $5 general admission and can be purchased by calling 410-651-7747.

Recording rap artist Ludacris headlines at the homecoming concert on Thursday, February 21, at 7 p.m. in the main arena of the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.  Baltimore’s rap artist Mully Man and D.C.’s R&B and hip hop artist J. Holiday will also perform. Tickets are $25 for a single ticket for the UMES community and $40 for additional tickets and the general public.  For more information, call 410-651-6434.

President Thompson hosts the fifth annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast on Friday, February 22, in the Student Services Center Ballroom at 7:30 a.m.  It will feature Pastor Matthew D. Gallashaw II of Philadelphia, Pa., as the keynote speaker, music by UMES choirs and saxophonist Everett Spells and breakfast by UMES Dining Services.  Tickets benefit student scholarships and can be purchased by calling 410-651-6102.  The cost is $40 per person or $350 per table of 10.

The pre-game homecoming party will be held on Friday, February 22, at 9 p.m. in the Tawes Gymnasium.  D.J. “Nix in the Mix” from New Jersey provides music.  Single tickets for the UMES community are $15, additional tickets and tickets for the general public are $25.  Call 410-651-6434. 

UMES Hawks take on the Florida A&M Rattlers in basketball action on Saturday, February 23, in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.  The women’s basketball game begins at 2 p.m. with men’s basketball following at 4 p.m.  Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling 410-651-7747.
