PRINCESS ANNE, MD-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John R. Lamkin II, director of bands, will perform its annual fall concert on Friday, October 10, at 7 p.m. in the Ella Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center.

This year the band will feature several new members, as well as several returning members, said Lamkin.  The band recently held auditions for the vocal position that was vacated by our former vocalist, Margaret Rutherford, who graduated in May 2008. The vocalist who was chosen is Karin Evans of Baltimore.

The band will be performing several new pieces, including a salsa arrangement of Clifford s The Blues Walk; Dizzy Gillespie s Mateca; and an arrangement of Mingus Duke Ellington s Sound of Love.    Evans, the new vocalist, will be featured on two wonderful standards, Strayhorn s Take the A Train and the sultry Embraceable You, a George and Ira Gershwin tune.

Last spring, the Jazz Ensemble along with several members of the UMES Wind Ensemble journeyed to St. Thomas where they performed at the Tortola Music Festival and several other venues.  This semester the band will perform at a Veterans Day celebration in Cambridge, Md., sponsored by the Pine Street Elks Lodge, a performance for the Wicomico NAACP, the Winterfest Gala at the Princess Royale Hotel in Ocean City and a service at Salem United Methodist Church in Pocomoke, Md.

The Jazz Ensemble fall concert is free and open to the public.  For more information, call 410-651-6571.
