PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) Program has been granted accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality (ACPHA).

Among the University System of Maryland schools, the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program is unique to UMES. The Princess Anne location is augmented by an additional upper division program of HRM study situated at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville.

The HRM program at UMES is housed in the state-of-the-art Richard A. Henson Conference Center.  Hotel guest rooms, banquet service and production facilities, specialized laboratories, classrooms and faculty offices all serve to provide a dynamic learning environment for HRM majors.  Concentrations or minors are available in culinary arts, restaurant management, food and beverage management, hotel administration and travel/tourism management.  In addition to the HRM degree program, the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management administratively houses the PGA Professional Golf Management degree program.

The 51st hospitality program to be fully accredited by ACPHA, the UMES HRM degree program celebrates a 100 percent placement rate for its graduates with such prestigious national and international industry giants as Marriott  and Hyatt Hotels, T.G.I. Friday’s and  Red Lobster Restaurants, Sodexo and Aramark Contract Services, Walt Disney and more.

Graduates of the newly accredited program, beginning December 2009, will receive the designation of Certified Hospitality Graduate, an industry endorsed designation that will distinguish graduates of accredited programs.  Conversely, the HRM Department is fast approaching the culmination of a long-time goal to boast a 100 percent Certified Hospitality Educator faculty as determined by the American Hotel and Lodging Association – Educational Foundation. The Department is further distinguished by its publication of the first tier, bi-annual  “HBCU Consortium Journal of Hospitality and Tourism.”
