PRINCESS ANNE, MD- May 5, 2010-The UMES Gospel Choir, under the direction of English faculty member Dr. Della Dameron-Johnson, will perform its Spring Concert on Saturday, May 8, at 5 p.m. in the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts.

The event is free and open to the public.

This year, the UMES Gospel Choir participated in the “Collegiate Gospel Spotlight” held at the annual board meeting of the Gospel Music Workshop of America in Henderson, Nev.

“We feel blessed and proud to be one of only four choirs invited,” Dameron-Johnson said.

Founded by the late gospel music icon Rev. James Cleveland in 1967, GMWA is the largest organization in the country specializing in gospel music with more than 185 chapters in the United States and abroad.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to gain national exposure, network with professionals in the gospel music industry, and sing before legendary Grammy and Stellar award winners,” said Dameron-Johnson, director of drama and assistant professor in the Department of English and Modern Language.

Dameron-Johnson received her bachelor’s from Lincoln University, her master’s from Northern Illinois University and her doctorate from the University of Maryland College Park.
