PRINCESS ANNE, MD – May 23, 2010-One of America’s most-renowned civil rights leaders, Rev. Al Sharpton will serve as the keynote speaker at the 14th annual National Association of Student Affairs Professionals conference, which is being held at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Sharpton, who has more than 40 years of experience as a community leader, politician, minister and advocate, is scheduled to speak from 3:30- 5 p.m. in the Student Services Center theater on Wednesday, June 2. The event is free and open to the public.
The NASAP is an organization dedicated to providing professional development opportunities for student affairs professionals who serve minority populations in diverse settings around the country.
In 2008, UMES was chosen to be the host of the NASAP Student Leadership Institute-a week-long, intensive, interactive vehicle for student leadership development-for a three-year period, starting in 2009.
This year’s event, which runs from May 31 until June 7, will attract more than 300 student leaders from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the UMES campus, said James Lunnermon II, director of student activities.
“It is both an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with the momentous task of hosting this Student Leadership Institute,” Lunnermon said. “All of the proper preparations have been made to ensure another successful week full of learning and leadership.”
Sharpton, the guest speaker for the NASAP conference, is the host of a daily radio talk show called the “Al Sharpton Show.”
Whether running for President of the United States in 2004 or leading civil rights protests, Sharpton’s highly visible career began at the age of four when he preached his first sermon.
Throughout his career, Sharpton has held such notable positions as the youth director of New York’s Operation Breadbasket, director of Ministers for National Rainbow Push coalition, and founder of his own broad-based progressive civil rights organization, the National Action Network.
