UMES hosts March 30 chamber music theatre performance
Core Ensemble performs “Ain’t I a Woman”

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore plays host to a free performance, “Ain’t I a Woman,” Thursday, March 30 by the Core Ensemble of Lake Worth, Fla.
The 7 p.m. chamber music theatre piece takes place at UMES’ Ella Fitzgerald Center along with an 11 a.m. master class, The Business of Art, in the Richard F. Hazel Hall, room 1020.
The ensemble developed its signature format featuring “the marriage of theatrical narrative to chamber music performance.” Actress Shayla Simmons portrays four African-American women of history: ex-slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, folk artist Clementine Hunter and civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. Her narrative is accompanied by cello, piano and percussion.
The music draws from spirituals and blues of the Deep South, urban Jazz Age, and contemporary concert music by African-Americans such as Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Max Roach and Diane Monroe.
