Event promotes, supports UMES golfers

The Million Dollar Golf Shootout, hosted by WMDT 47ABC and sponsored by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, begins this weekend and provides a chance for one local golfer to win $1 million.
The event features qualifying rounds at three different Lower Shore golf courses, where two golfers closest to the pin at each locale will advance to the finals and a chance at a $1 million prize if one can make a hole-in-one.
The contest will showcase the university’s PGA golf management program and its NCAA golf teams.
UMES’ golf management program prepares students for careers in the golf industry. It is a comprehensive degree program that integrates curriculum requirements of a hospitality and tourism management major with specialized golf management instruction, including 16 months of structured internship experience and refining skills to achieve a passing score on a Playing Ability Test.
The Hawks also have Division I men’s and women’s golf teams that compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Representatives from those programs will be on hand at each qualifying event and the finals.
“This is a great opportunity for the young golfer or even someone who wants to work in the golf industry looking for a career change, to come out and learn more about not only our teams, but our incredible golf management program,” UMES athletics director Keith Davidson said. “And for those avid golfers, a chance to win some money with a great shot!”
The first qualifying event will be held at Great Hope Golf Course near Westover Saturday, Oct. 27, from 4-5 p.m.
The second event is the following day, Sunday, Oct. 28, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Ocean City Golf Club in Berlin on the Newport Bay course.
The third qualifying event is Sunday, Nov. 4, in Salisbury at Nutters Crossing Golf Course from 9-10 a.m.
The finals featuring the two closest to the pin winners from each qualifying round will play that same day, Nov. 4, from 10-10:30 a.m. at Nutters Crossing.
Contestants who score a hole-in-one during a qualifying round will win $500 but it does not apply towards the grand prize. Contestants need not pre-register and there is no cost to participate.
