It is the policy of UMES that IRB members will not review (exempt, expedited or convened application), participate in the discussion of, or vote upon any research protocol: 1) for which they serve as principal investigator or co-investigator; 2) is sponsored by a company in which the committee member holds a financial interest and or intellectual property rights; 3) is sponsored by a company to which the IRB member has established an uncompensated relationship; 4)  for which they, or an immediate family member, were involved in the design, conduct, or reporting of the research.  IRB members with one or more of these types of conflicts of interest shall recuse themselves from the meeting during the discussion and vote on all such studies.

Additionally, IRB members with conflicts of interests cannot participate in the review of unanticipated problems involving risks to participants or others and cannot participate in the review of non-compliance at any level.
