Biographies

African American Studies Center (Oxford) – This reference source on African American Studies provides full-text access to 20,000 articles by top scholars in the field. Core content includes the Encyclopedia of African American History 1619-1895, the 2nd edition of Black Women in America and the African American National Biography.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index (Gale) – This index provides more than 20 million biographical citations on more than 6 million persons (living and deceased) from all fields of activity, covering more than 2,000 years of human history. 

Biography in Context (Gale) – This comprehensive source provides full-text biographical information on more than 150,000 people throughout history and across all subject areas. 

Literature Online (LION) (ProQuest) – This database contains more than 350,000 works of poetry, prose and drama from the 8th century to the present in the English language. It is an assembly of primary works, re-keyed from first editions or scholarly editions, written by the most influential and studied authors, as well as works of lesser known literary figures. Search for literary criticism, primary text, author pages or reference works. Includes full-text scholarly journals covering all aspects of literary studies and the literary index, the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL), created by the Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA).  

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

African American Studies Center (Oxford) – This reference source on African American Studies provides full-text access to 20,000 articles by top scholars in the field. Core content includes the Encyclopedia of African American History 1619-1895, the 2nd edition of Black Women in America and the African American National Biography.

Britannica Academic (Encyclopaedia Britannica) – One of the oldest and most well-known reference sources provides both short and book-length overview articles on almost all subjects. Also includes historical timelines, multimedia, selected magazine articles, notable quotations and a dictionary and thesaurus.

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia (EBSCO) –This database contains over 25,000 full-text encyclopedic records covering an array of subject areas.

Oxford English Dictionary (OED) – This web database provides complete text of the 20-volume 2nd edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (1989), plus its 3-volume Additions Series (1993, 1997). Comprehensive dictionary of the English language. Traces development of English from approximately 1150 AD to the present day. Includes many varieties of English. Coverage: 1989 – current 

Directories and Catalogs

ccAdvisor (CRL) – This searchable web database created by the American Libraries Association and The Charleston Company provides critical reviews for digital resources used by academic libraries. Subscription through Center for Research Libraries (CRL) membership.

Center for Research Libraries (CRL)– CRL is a consortium of North American academic and independent research libraries that acquires and preserves newspapers, journals, documents, archives, and other traditional and digital resources for research and teaching and makes them available to member institutions through Inter-Library Loan. CRL’s online catalog provides access to over four million newspapers, journals, dissertations, archives, government publications and other traditional and digital resources for research and teaching. Holdings include such diverse materials as 800,000 doctoral dissertations (including those of Albert Einstein, Dag Hammarskjold and other Nobel laureates); some of the earliest African-American newspapers; and the 100,000-plus-page archive of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge security force. Emphasis is on materials produced outside the United States, and the Center has special strength in publications and archives from many developing nations. These holdings are available for use by students, scholars and other researchers affiliated with CRL member institutions.

Dissertations

Dissertations & Theses Global (ProQuest) – This database is the authoritative source for information about doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. It represents the works of authors from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities. Full-text is available from 1997 to the present. Coverage:1861 – current 

Maryland History & Culture Bibliography (University of Maryland) – This database contains citations of articles, books and doctoral dissertations about various aspects of Maryland’s history and culture. The citations are gathered from scholarly journals, local and state history-related newsletters and magazines, subject indexes to monographs and journals, publishers’ catalogs, and electronic databases, among other sources. Genealogy-related works are generally not included unless they are of a more general nature, for example, indexes to various types of vital records or Civil War muster rolls.

Proceedings and Conferences

PapersFirst (OCLC) – This index contains papers presented at conferences worldwide. Over 2,380,000 records. Coverage: 1993 – current 

ProceedingsFirst (OCLC) – This resource is an index of worldwide conference proceedings with over 74,000 records. Each record contains a list of the papers presented at the conference. Coverage: 1993 – current 

Testing Resources

Mental Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print (EBSCO) – This resource is essential for evaluating contemporary testing instruments. It includes over 2,000 educational, psychological and vocational tests and measurements commercially published in the English language. It consists of full-text descriptive entries, references and full-text critical reviews of assessment tools.

PrepSTEP for Colleges & Universities (EBSCO Learning Express) – This online platform provides test preparation and skill building tutorials for academic success in college (including English, math, science, computer science and organizational skills). Graduate admissions practice tests are included for the GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT and more. This platform also contains career preparation information. To begin, users must register for an account (follow instructions provided).
