Wastewater generated from laboratories, maintenance activities, custodial operations, and food service areas must be managed in accordance with applicable discharge requirements. Only materials that meet sanitary sewer discharge limits may be released to the wastewater system. All other chemicals, hazardous substances, and prohibited materials must be collected and managed through the appropriate waste disposal programs. Proper control of wastewater discharges helps prevent damage to treatment systems, reduces environmental impacts, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing sanitary sewer use.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is committed to protecting public health and the environment through the responsible management of wastewater discharges. Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) works with Facilities Management, other Physical Plant departments, contractors, and the campus community to support compliance with sanitary sewer requirements through proper disposal practices and pollution prevention. Every member of the campus community shares responsibility for ensuring that only approved materials are discharged to the sanitary sewer system and that prohibited substances are properly managed through established waste disposal procedures.
