Waste reduction is the most effective way to minimize environmental impacts, conserve natural resources, and reduce disposal costs. Waste reduction begins by preventing waste at its source rather than managing it after it is generated. Source reduction strategies include maintaining digital records instead of printing, ordering only the quantities of materials needed, selecting products with minimal or recyclable packaging, reusing materials whenever practical, and incorporating sustainable purchasing practices into daily operations. Preventing waste before it is created is the highest priority in the waste management hierarchy.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is committed to reducing waste generation through sustainable practices that support environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance. Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) works with Facilities Management, other Physical Plant departments, contractors, and the campus community to promote source reduction, material reuse, recycling, and responsible waste management. Every member of the campus community plays an important role by making informed purchasing decisions, reducing unnecessary consumption, and incorporating waste reduction practices into teaching, research, operations, and administrative activities.
