Student Enrichment and Experiential Learning Program
The Student Enrichment and Experiential Learning (SEEL) program brings high school students in Maryland’s Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset counties to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for a seven-week internship, where students will conduct a research project in one of the key focus areas of the Center. Students will be exposed to the UMES campus, work directly with a faculty member and graduate students, and researchers. This is a paid, full-time, non-residential program for students with daily transportation to UMES.
Students will gain environmental literacy through activity-rich educational and experiential learning activities related to the Coastal Bays.
Preference will be given to students that have secured admission to the UMES environmental science program and that plan to start their freshman year immediately after the summer program. Five students will be selected each year and will work in the labs of faculty members along with summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program interns and graduate students. The program is led by Patricia Goslee, Ed.D., the education and outreach coordinator for the SEEL program.
Program Dates
The SEEL program will run from June 18 – August 3, 2018. All application materials (student application, teacher, counselor and parent forms) are due by April 20, 2018 at 11:59 PM EST.
Eligibility
Graduating high school seniors with interests in marine and environmental science and who have daily transportation to and from the UMES campus in Princess Anne, MD. Students will be engaged in activities from Monday to Friday, from approximately 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Expectations
- Students are required to complete the seven-week internship to receive the stipend ($2,000)
- Students will present their research during the symposium at the end of the internship period
- Students are expected to provide their own transportation to UMES
Research Projects
The CREST-CISCEP Center’s research focuses on three important components of the aquatic ecosystem, all of which have economic and/or environmental implications for people living in coastal areas. Each CREST-CISCEP graduate student works on one of the following collaborative research projects.
The three collaborative sub-projects deal with the interaction between climate variability and (1) food web dynamics, (2) exchange of materials between MCBs and coastal ocean, (3) microbial dynamics in the MCBs.

The counselor and teacher will be emailed a link to submit a recommendation letter. Applicants will receive an email notification when the counselor and teacher have completed the process.
