Program Overview
The PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program offered by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) School of Pharmacy (SOP) and Apple Discount Drugs entails 12 months of professional practice learning experiences. Accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), our program is designed to allow the resident to train and develop expertise in core areas of community pharmacy practice and is focused on direct patient care. It has the flexibility to adapt to the needs and interests of the resident, while providing the foundation for practice in multiple roles in the outpatient setting. Residents who complete our program will be prepared to pursue multiple career paths, including roles in academia and independent pharmacy ownership.
Resident Responsibilities
The affiliation between UMES and Apple Discount Drugs provides the resident with the opportunity to participate in educational activities in addition to community and specialty pharmacy. This includes a 12-month faculty appointment in the School of Pharmacy with the opportunity to obtain a teaching certificate.
In addition to all of the requirements associated with the core learning experiences, the resident will:
- Provide medication therapy management (MTM) services
- Provide immunizations, health and wellness education, and other patient care services
- Collaborate with certified diabetes educators to manage patients with diabetes
- Organize and run public health promotion events and programs
- Provide education to pharmacy staff on new medications and/or processes
- Precept Doctor of Pharmacy students on introductory or advanced pharmacy practice experiences under the supervision of the designated preceptors
- Participate in teaching opportunities in the UMES-SOP
- Complete a well-designed research project in collaboration with a preceptor that will be presented both locally and nationally
- Participate in the residency program recruitment efforts
- Attend national, state, and/or local pharmacy meetings and conventions
Learning Experiences
As part of our program, residents will complete nine required learning experiences. To complement these required learning experiences, our program offers a number of elective learning experiences that will expose the resident to other areas of pharmacy practice while enhancing the resident’s growth and development. The resident must complete at least two elective experiences.

Teaching Opportunities
A wide array of teaching opportunities in the UMES-SOP Doctor of Pharmacy program are made available to the resident. From traditional lectures and case development to skills assessment and discussion facilitation, the resident can select teaching opportunities that suit his or her interest(s), schedule, and career goals. Sample teaching opportunities:
- Small group facilitation in the OSCE activities
- Professional Development Course Series ( PHAR561, PHAR562, PHAR661, PHAR662)
- Endocrinology module (PHAR622)
- Integration of Pharmacy Practice
Program Benefits
The resident will be employed by and received benefits from the State of Maryland through UMES. In addition to a stipend of $50,000, the resident will receive health insurance as well as paid annual, holiday, sick, personal, and professional development leave. Professional development funds for attendance at conferences, workshops, etc. will also be provided to support the growth and development of the resident.
