UMES requires that all human subjects research in which UMES students, faculty, and or staff participate, must be reviewed by the UMES IRB and an approval or determination of exemption be issued by the UMES IRB to the principal investigator prior to initiation of any research activities, including recruitment and advertising. Principal investigators of all human subjects research projects will follow the application guidelines provided by the UMES IRB. Only the UMES IRB, or its designee, has the authority to review proposed research and determine whether it meets the federal criteria as exempt research per 45 CFR 46.104 (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-45/subtitle-A/subchapter-A/part-46/subpart-A/section-46.104). The determination of exemption will be documented and communicated to the principal investigator.
