UMES Retains Rank in Top Tier of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Black Colleges
PRINCESS ANNE, MD For the second consecutive year, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is ranked in the top tier of America s Best Black Colleges as reported by U.S. News and World Report.
“The University of Maryland Eastern Shore continues to provide good quality undergraduate and graduate programs that equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the challenges of America and other global societies,” said Dr. Thelma B. Thompson, UMES president. Our focus remains being true to our worthy mission. As a university, we are reminded daily our greatest responsibility is to forthcoming generations.”
A historically black university with a land-grant mission, the 745-acre campus includes a 350-acre research and teaching farm and is nationally recognized for the beauty of its grounds. It is home to some 4,100 students who represent over 41 countries and its graduation rate is the highest among historically black colleges in Maryland. Enrollment at the University continues to increase and along with record-fundraising, the Women s Bowling Team is the first HBCU women s team to win a national championship.
True to its land-grant heritage, it offers a number of unique programs geared to the needs of the region, including aviation science, construction management, hotel and restaurant management, engineering, and most recently professional golf management and pharmacy. UMES is the only HBCU with a PGA accredited golf management program. Pre-professional training is available in eight distinct fields (from criminal justice to fashion merchandising to physician s assistant) and doctoral programs are offered in educational leadership, Food Science and Technology, Marine-Estuarine-Environmental Sciences, Organizational Leadership, Physical Therapy, and Toxicology.
Its historic tradition of inclusiveness and constituent membership in the University System of Maryland combine to make UMES a strong engine of growth and development in its community, providing students with opportunities to learn from a well-balanced array of academic programs that respond to local needs as well as more global concerns.
