PRINCESS ANNE, MD – Dr. Della Dameron-Johnson, the woman responsible for directing the most highly regarded dinner theatre productions on the Shore, has written an original stage play for this year’s show at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Home to one of the most popular dinner theatre spots in the region, the University is proud to present “Motown and Mo'(More).” The show opens on Thursday, April 12, in the Richard A. Henson Center ballroom. Performance times are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and seating for dinner begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30 for Thursday’s show, $40 for Friday’s and $45 for Saturday’s show.
“Motown and Mo'” develops as its main character, Tunes, seeks part-time help for his “Old School Tunes Record Shop.” An extravaganza ensues that leads diners on a journey through the music of Motown, with performances by “Smokey Robinson and the Miracles,” “The Temptations,” “Gladys Knight and the Pips,” “Ike and Tina Turner and the Ikettes,” “Peaches and Herb,” “Rick James,” “Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell” and more. Among the special treats for the night are a surprise appearance by a UMES administrator; a special performance by the youngest member of the Drama Society, Jon’Mel Davenport, who made her debut when she was three months old in the play “Fences” by August Wilson; and a special appearance by Marie Kenney of Princess Anne.
Back by popular demand, Kenney will perform songs by Aretha Franklin. A Drama Society veteran, she returns to the stage after taking a break following a ten-year stint with the various dinner theatre production crews over the years.
