PRINCESS ANNE, MD – Faculty and staff of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore assemble for an opening convocation on Monday, August 25, at 10 a.m. in the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts.  Dr. Judith James, executive director of the board of education in Prince George s County, is the keynote speaker.

James, having recently been appointed the executive director of the board of education in Prince George s County, offers a wealth of knowledge in higher education, with experience at the community college, four-year college and university levels.  In her capacity as vice chancellor of student services and special programs for the chancellor s office of the 108 California community colleges prior to relocating to the east, she was responsible for oversight of large divisions and provided leadership and technical support to various student services programs.

Other positions of leadership held by James include vice president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College system office, where she served as chief student affairs officer for the system s 13 community colleges and 15 technical colleges.  At the national level, she has served as director of the Office of Urban and Metropolitan Programs, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.  Her service at the state level includes a position as executive director of the Teaching Leadership Consortium-Ohio.

James is a native of Oakland, Calif.  She earned her Ed.D. in organization and leadership in higher education from the University of San Francisco, a Master of Arts degree in education from Holy Names College and a Bachelor of Arts in cultural anthropology/sociology from Mills College, all in California.

This event is free and open to the public.  Faculty and staff of the University begin the 2008-09 academic year under the guidance of President Thelma B. Thompson s new academic theme — Closing the Academic Achievement Gap: Accountability, Planning, Implementation and Assessment.
