PRINCESS ANNE – Health professionals and the public are invited to attend the 12th annual UMES Physical Therapy Research Symposium to be held starting at 7 p.m., Friday, April 27, in Hazel Hall on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
The symposium consists of oral and poster presentations of final research projects by the Physical Therapy Department’s graduating doctoral Class of 2007. A tour of the department’s state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory equipment will follow.
This year’s topics will include studies in balance and agility, cardiovascular fitness, functional independence in stroke patients, cultural competency in physical therapy and the effect of exercise during labor.
“It is a very exciting time. This is the culminating event for the students’ research projects,” said instructor, Cynthia Gill. After completing the term at UMES, the students will spend the summer gaining practical, hands-on experience in hospitals and clinics, including at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is a three-year course of study. Graduates are prepared to practice as autonomous providers of prevention, examination and intervention in acute care, outpatient and rehabilitation settings, as well as educational and research environments.
