Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
In separate incidents on late Friday night, April 27, 2007, at the off-campus apartment complexes – Talon Square and Arden Run – one University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) student was shot; a second was stabbed; and a third former student was shot, also. The two University of Maryland Eastern Shore students who were hospitalized Friday night have been discharged. One of the injured students will convalesce at home for the remainder of the semester. The status of the former student, although he has been released from the hospital, is unknown.
University officials have spoken at length with the parents of the students currently enrolled at the University, who were involved in this unfortunate incident and have assured them that we will do everything possible to assist local police in their investigation and attempts to arrest the perpetrator(s) of these crimes. We are committed to continuing to provide the highest level of security for all members of the campus community.
“The University of Maryland Eastern Shore maintains and strictly enforces a policy of zero tolerance (both on and off campus) with regards to fighting, the use and possession of illicit drugs, and the possession of dangerous weapons, firearms, and explosives. If a student is found guilty of initiating a fight, drug possession, use, or distribution (trafficking), or using any object with the intent to cause harm, the minimum sanction will be suspension from the University for one (1) academic semester. Suspension from the University for a violation of the zero tolerance policy will result in the cancellation of the accused student’s housing contract and denial of a housing contract in the future. Students found guilty of drug distribution or the possession of dangerous weapons, firearms, or explosives, the maximum sanction may result in expulsion from the University.” (University of Maryland Eastern Shore – Student Code of Conduct: Student Judicial Manual)
Always faculty, students, and staff are expected to work together to insure that the educational environment that we enjoy here at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is preserved. Therefore, we are re-introducing the -8484- “YOU DO IT, WE TELL IT” – campaign that was instituted by the Student Government Association (SGA) during the spring semester of 2006. We are asking that you call this number if you witness something that you think will disrupt the security that we enjoy on our campus.
