PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore hosts the 16th annual Mid-Atlantic HBCU Undergraduate and Graduate Research Day on Tuesday, April 10, from 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Student Services Center on the UMES campus. Each year the event highlights poster presentations of the scholarly work of undergraduate and graduate students from minority serving institutions in biology, chemistry, mathematics, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, and computer and technology sciences. Dr. Clifford Houston, from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, is the keynote speaker.
Houston, one of the premier scientists in the world, holds the distinction of being elected the first African-American president of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) for 2007. His scientific interests include the role of Aeromonashydrophilaenterotoxins in the pathogenesis of disease and the development of vaccines against this pathogen. He has also served as a leader in UTMB’s science education and health science career programs and brings great insight into the critical decisions necessary in the pursuit of academic and career excellence.
