Dear UMES students, faculty, and staff:

Recognizing the heavy emotional distress experienced by our campus from the fatal car accident that claimed the lives of two students and seriously injured two others, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will suspend classes Monday, Oct. 7, and Tuesday, Oct. 8 so that our community can grieve these tragedies.

These wellness days will allow students, faculty, and staff to begin the healing process, receive support through our counseling services, and come together as a community to process these painful losses.

On Monday, the university will have a moment of silence at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Services Center Courtyard to remember the students lost and pray for the students who were injured.

Tuesday will be a day of wellness, with details to be announced.

Anyone with questions about the plans for either day can contact Associate Vice President & Dean of Students Enrollment Management and Student Experience Dr. Jamar Simmons at: djsimmons@umes.edu.

Meanwhile, counseling services can be accessed by calling: 410-651-6449 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, or in person in Suite 2260 of the Student Development Center.
