PRINCESS ANNE, MD (March, 17, 2011) – An opening reception for the Fine Art Student Show at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will be held on Thursday, March 31, from 4-6 p.m.
The show – which features a variety of work, including photography, drawing, painting, comic book design and ceramics – run until Friday, April 29.
“The Fine Arts Student Show gives students, who are currently taking studio art classes on campus, an opportunity to present their work to the general public,” said Dr. Anke Van Wagenberg, director of the Mosely Gallery. “Undergraduates also learn about deadlines, framing and installation conditions – all of which are a part of the exhibition process.”
This month, entries are also being sought for the UMES art competition for high school students who are currently enrolled in art classes in Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties. The exhibition will be on display in the hallway of the Arts and Technology Center on campus starting Thursday, April 21, through Friday, April 29.
“We strongly encourage participation from high school students in the tri-county area,” said Van Wagenberg, who coordinated UMES’ first high school art competition in 2008.
Students must deliver their artwork to Van Wagenberg by Monday, April 18, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Information including the name of the artist, grade and high school must be clearly visible on the front of the piece submitted. The artwork must be matted or framed and ready to hang with a wire on the back. It must not weigh more than five pounds.
Judges retain the right to refuse artwork for any reason.
The winners will be announced at a reception and open house in the UMES art studios on Thursday, April 21, from 4-5 p.m. All participating students, their families, friends, supporters and the general public are welcome to attend the event.
“Three winners will be chosen to receive $100 in art supplies,” said Van Wagenberg. “All students must be present at the reception in order to receive an award.”
Dennis Williams, Princess Anne town commissioner, and Dr. Veronique Diriker, sponsor of the show, will present the awards at the beginning of the reception.
Events at the Mosely Gallery – made possible with the generous support of the Maryland State Arts Council and the Somerset County Arts Council – are free and open to the public.
The gallery is located in the Arts and Technology building on the UMES campus. It is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
