PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The local husband and wife artist team of Sandy Strachan and Bill Buchanan are currently displaying their 2-D art now until September 5, at the Mosely Gallery on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Strachan and Buchanan own and operate Studio on Silva in Stockton.  Buchanan has exhibited locally since 1998.  His current works combine the dry pigments and wax medium of the Renaissance artists with plaster for an artistic statement.  The surface of the plaster allows me the technique of Fresco Secco as a vehicle for my painting, said Buchanan.  As layers and tints of paint are applied to the surface of the plaster, the beauty of the patina reveals textures which are unique to each piece.   Landscapes are the first in his series of Fresco Seccos.

Buchanan received a bachelor s in art from St. Mary s College.  He did graduate coursework at the Maryland Institute, College of Art and holds a master s in education from Salisbury University.

Strachan has participated in numerous exhibitions and has received many commissions.  My works concentrate on the simple beauty of humanity, the people, objects and views of the world around me that are typically overlooked, said Strachan.  I use traditional Venetian techniques involving layers of paint combined with an Italian beeswax medium to achieve the luminous quality that cannot be duplicated even with today s innovative new materials.

Strachan holds a bachelor s in art education from Kutztown State University and did graduate coursework at the Maryland Institute, College of Art.  Both Strachan and Buchanan teach studio art at Pocomoke High School.

A closing reception will take place on Thursday, September 4, from 4-6 p.m. at the Gallery.  Events at the Mosely Gallery are free and open to the public.  The Mosely Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For more information, call 410-651-7770 or visit www.umes.edu/mosely.
