PRINCESS ANNE, MD – Tyesha Burks of Millville received the Richard Bernstein Achievement Award during spring commencement ceremonies at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).
Burks graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a grade point average of 3.99 on a scale of 4.0. For her academic success, she has been accepted to a number of doctoral programs and plans to accept the offer of a full scholarship from Johns Hopkins University, where she will study molecular biology.
The Richard Bernstein Achievement Award for Excellence is reserved for UMES seniors graduating in business, accounting, engineering technology, construction management technology, science, computer science or mathematics. It is awarded on an annual basis during the fall and spring commencement exercises. The recipient must demonstrate leadership abilities at school and/or in the community, the ability to be effective on an interpersonal basis, a high degree of integrity and the ability to work with others. He or she must also be someone who has had to overcome physical or personal obstacles to earn their degree. Finally, there must be evidence of outstanding performance in academic work and demonstration of the potential for continued scholarly efforts.
