Global center refashions name, awards grants
The Center of Excellence for Global Food Security and Defense (CEGFSD) was previously known as the Center of Excellence for International Engagement and Development (CEIED). The Center adopted its new name on July 1. The Center is supported through a grant of $1.3 million from USDA-NIFA. USDA Awards $5.76 Million in Support of Four Centers of Excellence at 1890 Institutions.
The University of Maryland – Eastern Shore will develop “The 1890 Universities Center of Excellence for Global Food Security and Defense” to foster international partnerships that strengthen agricultural development in developing countries and engage international researchers in addressing new and emerging animal and plant pests and diseases, and agricultural disaster recovery. https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDANIFA/bulletins/2d8ce3f

USDA Invests $4.8 Million In Three 1890 Centers of Excellence
The White House Task Force on Rural Prosperity notes agriculture is an important driver of the rural economy. These three institutions are uniquely suited to create opportunities to develop and harness technological innovation to bolster the rural workforce to ultimately improve the quality of life in underserved areas.
Each of the following universities is awarded a $1,600,000 grant:
- University of Maryland – Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, Maryland, for its Center of Excellence for International Engagement and Development (CEIED)
- The University of Maryland’s CEIED will fund teaching, research, extension, and integrated projects designed to supply the United States with a globally educated workforce and support critical global development needs.
