Hello
I was born in Sumter General Hospital in Sumter South Carolina. I am the second son of The Rev. Charles W. Talley and Mrs. Louise B. Talley. I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1976 and a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1978 from South Carolina State College, in Orangeburg South Carolina. I later obtained my Doctorate in Rehabilitation from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale Illinois. I also received a advanced Certificates of study in Management and Development from the Harvard University School of Education.
I have served in various capacities over my career starting as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Department of Vocational Rehabilitator of South Carolina and then as a Disability Examiner for the same entity. Among the accomplishments that I consider noteworthy are that I was the first African American to serve as a Director for a Regional Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program (RRCEP) and he was the first African American to Chair an academic unit at Assumption College.
During my career, I have served as the principle investigator and or Author of more than twelve grants that have netted over five million dollars of funding. I have published on a variety of topics including research related to Private Sector Rehabilitation, Multicultural Counseling, Mentoring, Anxiety and Depression and the Recruitment and Retention of faculty.
The organizations that I am most active in recently include The American Counseling Association, (ACA), The National Council of Rehabilitation Educators, (NCRE), The Association of Black Psychologist (ABPSI), and The National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Counselors.
Teaching Philosophy: I feel you have to be able to adapt your teaching to fit your subject, your students and your circumstances. One size does not fit all, nor should it. Good teachers are always looking for a way to inspire their students to be the best that they can be.
