About the UMES STEM STARS Program

As a public 1890 land-grant Historically Black University that embraces diversity, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is committed to serving first-generation and underserved students and providing educational, research, and community engagement opportunities to transform the lives of its students who will impact the state, region, and the world.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was selected as a recipient of the $2.5 million Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Driving Change Initiative Award in 2022. To date, UMES is the first and only HBCU to receive this award. As a result, the UMES STEM STARS Program was created.

The mission of the UMES STEM STARS program is to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups who pursue and earn PhDs and MD-PhDs in STEM disciplines by identifying and removing barriers to equity in the STEM learning environment.

The UMES STEM STARS Program officially launched during the Summer of 2023 with the selection of the inaugural cohort of ten scholars who participated in the UMES STEM STARS Summer Program.

Currently, the UMES STEM STARS Program is accepting applications for the second cohort of scholars. Only students, who declared a STEM major and have been admitted for the Fall 2024 semester can access the application. Applications will be accepted until April 15, 2024. Successful applicants will be notified no later than May 1, 2024, through email (to their UMES email address).

STEM STARS stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Students Achieving Results in Science”, and our students do just that! In the last several years, 60% of degrees awarded at UMES were in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math, collectively known as STEM areas. In addition, our eight healthcare professions programs are the most of any HBCU and contribute to STEM success for UMES graduates.
