{"id":1368,"date":"2021-09-27T12:28:54","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T16:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/social\/?page_id=1368"},"modified":"2022-04-28T12:27:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T16:27:59","slug":"sociology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/social\/sociology\/","title":{"rendered":"Sociology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sociology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The specific objectives of the major program in Sociology are to develop in each student:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>An understanding of the principles which determine the operation of human societies.<\/li><li>The ability to think clearly, independently and critically.<\/li><li>The ability to do sociological research.<\/li><li>The foundations necessary for graduate study and for careers in the service professions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sociology major must complete 120 semester hours of University courses.&nbsp; Included in the120 semester hours are a minimum of 21 hours of required sociology courses and 15 hours of sociology electives.&nbsp; Sociology majors must also complete six (6) additional hours in other Social Science areas (e.g., POLI, ECON, etc.).&nbsp; A minimum grade of \u201cC\u201d must be obtained in all major courses.&nbsp;Students must maintain a 2.5 overall GPA and 2.5 in sociology courses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Required Major Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SOCI 101&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SOCI 221&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SOCI 303&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;SOCI 431&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SOCI 222&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SOCI 231&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SOCI 232<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Required Supportive Courses<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MATH 109&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; PSYC 200<br>Six (6) additional hours in other Social Science areas (ex.., POLI, ECON, etc.).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-coblocks-dynamic-separator is-style-fullwidth\" style=\"height:50px\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click to view the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stg15.umes.edu\/uploadedFiles\/_DEPARTMENTS\/Social_Sciences\/Content\/Curriculum%20Guide%20for%20Sociology.pdf\">Curriculum Guide for Sociology<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-coblocks-dynamic-separator is-style-fullwidth\" style=\"height:50px\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sociology The specific objectives of the major program in Sociology are to develop in each student: An understanding of the principles which determine the operation of human societies.
