{"id":3986,"date":"2011-09-06T14:47:05","date_gmt":"2011-09-06T18:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=3986"},"modified":"2026-07-13T21:47:40","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T01:47:40","slug":"umes-faculty-shows-new-artwork-at-gallery-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/umes-faculty-shows-new-artwork-at-gallery-opening\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES faculty shows new artwork at gallery opening"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday, September 6, 2011<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Mosely&nbsp;Gallery of art at UMES opens the 2011-12 academic&nbsp;year&nbsp;with &#8220;Reboot, New Work by Fine-Arts Faculty.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show opens with a &#8220;meet the artists&#8221; reception on Thurs., Sept. 8, from 4-6 p.m. in the gallery.&nbsp; On display will be a diverse selection of installations, paintings, photographs, ceramics, experimental media and cutting edge conceptual work, said Gallery Director Anke Van&nbsp;Wagenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The exhibition creates an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and the greater Delmarva community to enjoy the creative new output of the campus&#8217; visual artists,&#8221; said Van&nbsp;Wagenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Returning faculty artists have contributed to the show as well as some newcomers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our studio&nbsp;faculty are&nbsp;all active artists as well as educators. This exhibition allows students to see a sampling of what their instructors have done in the past year,&#8221; said Christopher Harrington, the newly-appointed acting chair of the Department of Fine Arts.&nbsp; &#8220;We show, by example, that art is something continuously lived. If you aren&#8217;t making art-you&#8217;re not an artist,&#8221; Harrington showcases, among others, a C\u00e9zanne-inspired painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brad Hudson, an artist and illustrator at the university for over a decade, has been focusing his energies developing a body of comic book illustrations and characters.&nbsp; Hudson developed a sequential arts concentration at the school and takes students to national comic book conventions to learn more about the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hudson&#8217;s work joins that of faculty members Michel Demanche, Karen Bearman, Helene English and Solomon Isekeije.\u00a0 Photography professor Demanche submits &#8220;Redesign, Self-portrait in Motion,&#8221; an installation in mixed media, wood, Plexiglas and video.\u00a0 Bearman will show wheel-thrown, functional pieces in stoneware and porcelain; English paintings; and Isekeije mixed media.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Gladden-egeye.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3987\" width=\"407\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Gladden-egeye.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Gladden-egeye-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Gladden-egeye-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joy Maxwell is a graduate of UMES, who has taught Introduction to Ceramics at the university\u00a0for the last eight years.\u00a0 She is the art director for Go-Getters Inc in Salisbury.\u00a0 Maxwell &#8220;ponders the themes of modern frustrations, influences and enticements&#8221; in her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New to the show and faculty at UMES is David Gladden, a graduate of Brooklyn College&#8217;s Performance and Interactive Media Arts MFA program.&nbsp; His video and installation piece, &#8220;Nothing&nbsp;On&nbsp;Again,&#8221; depicts mass media culture and its effect on society.&nbsp; Other newcomers are Dorian Williams and Matt Shockley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Mosely&nbsp;Gallery is free and open to the public, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.&nbsp; The current exhibit &#8220;Reboot, New Work by Fine-Arts Faculty&#8221; will be on display through Oct. 14.
