{"id":3964,"date":"2011-08-30T14:30:12","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T18:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=3964"},"modified":"2026-07-13T21:47:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T01:47:56","slug":"umes-embarks-on-its-125th-academic-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/umes-embarks-on-its-125th-academic-year\/","title":{"rendered":"UMES embarks on its 125th academic year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday, August 30, 2011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRINCESS ANNE, MD (Aug. 30, 2011) Classes for the fall semester at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore begin Wednesday, the start of a milestone academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"144\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image00280.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image00280.jpeg 144w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image00280-50x50.jpeg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES celebrates the 125<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;year anniversary of its founding when nine students enrolled in September 1886 in a new school started by the old Methodist Episcopal denomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the now-public university has some 4,500 students, which includes a new freshman class of 780, who can choose from a diverse array of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES received the formal OK in June to offer three new degrees starting this fall; a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry, a Master of Science degree in chemistry and Master of Medical Science in physician assistant studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mortimer Neufville, a former UMES administrator, has returned to campus after 15 years to serve as interim president while a search for former President Thelma B. Thompson&#8217;s successor is underway. Thompson retired Aug. 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Undergraduates are just starting their studies, but the second class of 61 students in the doctor of pharmacy program arrived in July.
