{"id":3386,"date":"2008-02-25T12:40:35","date_gmt":"2008-02-25T16:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=3386"},"modified":"2026-07-13T21:57:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T01:57:26","slug":"lecturer-addresses-black-entrepreneurship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/lecturer-addresses-black-entrepreneurship\/","title":{"rendered":"Lecturer Addresses Black Entrepreneurship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Simba-Sana-photo.doc-685x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3387\" width=\"480\" height=\"718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Simba-Sana-photo.doc-685x1024.jpg 685w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Simba-Sana-photo.doc-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Simba-Sana-photo.doc-768x1147.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Simba-Sana-photo.doc-1028x1536.jpg 1028w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/Simba-Sana-photo.doc.jpg 1296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday, February 25, 2008<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRINCESS ANNE, MD-&#8220;Black Entrepreneurship and Institution Building,&#8221; the topic of the annual Black History Month Lecture at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, will be addressed on Thursday, February 28, at 7 p.m. in the Student Services Center Theater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The featured guest speaker is&nbsp;Simba&nbsp;Sana, the CEO of&nbsp;Karibu&nbsp;Books, a retail chain of African American bookstores in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore regions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Karibu&nbsp;(pronounced KA-REE-BOO) means &#8220;come in&#8221; or &#8220;welcome&#8221; in&nbsp;KiSwahili, the most widely spoken African language.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to their motto, the bookstore &#8220;\u2026.celebrates Black History and accomplishments 365 days of the year!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sana&#8217;s own story is one of accomplishment.&nbsp; Raised in Carver Terrace (Little Vietnam) in Northeast Washington, D.C., he overcame obstacles to graduate from Mount Saint Mary&#8217;s College in&nbsp;Emitsburg, Md., with a double major in accounting and business and finance.&nbsp; He also earned a master&#8217;s from Howard University in African Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sana was an auditor at Ernst and Young when he decided to join his friend Yao Glover, current COO of&nbsp;Karibu&nbsp;Books, in his entrepreneurship of a vending operation in 1992.
