{"id":3157,"date":"2012-04-19T04:47:22","date_gmt":"2012-04-19T08:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=3157"},"modified":"2012-04-19T04:47:22","modified_gmt":"2012-04-19T08:47:22","slug":"high-school-students-offered-summer-language-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/high-school-students-offered-summer-language-program\/","title":{"rendered":"High school students offered summer language program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday, April 19, 2012<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Study Arabic or Chinese in high tech setting<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRINCESS ANNE, MD-(April 19) High school-age students can get a leg up at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore this summer learning Arabic or Chinese-two languages that are in high demand in the workforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Registration is now open for The Summer Language Experience, a two-week, intensive, non-residential program designed to provide beginners with an introduction to the language as well as cultural understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is a great opportunity for motivated high school or home school students who want to make the most of their summer by studying a foreign language,&#8221; said Tammy Gharbi, acting coordinator of the Foreign Language Instructional Center (FLIC) at UMES.&nbsp; &#8220;It would take nearly 15 weeks in a traditional school year to accomplish the 60 hours of instruction offered in The Summer Language Experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The courses will be taught by native-speaking instructors in a state-of-the-art language learning classroom at the university July 16-27.&nbsp; Dr. Mohamed&nbsp;Tirab&nbsp;will teach Modern Standard Arabic, while Susan Yin will teach Mandarin Chinese.&nbsp; Both are instructors in the Department of English and Modern Languages at UMES and teach at other educational institutions in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fee for either course is $280 and includes all materials.&nbsp;
