{"id":3111,"date":"2012-03-30T04:25:16","date_gmt":"2012-03-30T08:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=3111"},"modified":"2012-03-30T04:25:16","modified_gmt":"2012-03-30T08:25:16","slug":"guest-lecture-exploring-early-college-options-for-blacks-april-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/guest-lecture-exploring-early-college-options-for-blacks-april-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Guest lecture: Exploring early college options for blacks &#8211; April 3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/09\/Irvine-Russell_UMES-grad.jfif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3112\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday, March 30, 2012<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRINCESS ANNE, MD &#8211; (March 30, 2012) &#8211; Dr. Russell Irvine, author of &#8220;The African American Quest for Institutions of Higher Education Before the Civil War,&#8221; will deliver a guest lecture and sign books on April 3 at UMES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event-a precursor to national Library Week-takes place in the Frederick Douglass Library auditorium at the university at 7 p.m.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irvine, a UMES alumnus, is a retired associate professor of educational policy from Georgia State University in Atlanta.&nbsp; He earned a doctorate in the sociology of education from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio.&nbsp; His work focuses on Ashmun Institute in Chester County, Pa. (Lincoln University), Liberia College in West Africa (University of Liberia) and Avery College, which was located in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The journey to research and complete the book took him 14 years and around the globe,&#8221; said Jennifer Neumyer, special collections and outreach librarian at UMES.&nbsp; The book,&nbsp;Neumyer said, offers an in depth study into efforts of higher education for African-Americans at a time when it was improbable.
