Each year the event highlights poster presentations of the scholarly work of undergraduate and graduate students from minority serving institutions in biology, chemistry, mathematics, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, and computer and technology sciences. Dr. Clifford Houston, from the University&nbsp;of&nbsp;Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, is the keynote speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Houston, one of the premier scientists in the world, holds the distinction of being elected the first African-American president of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) for 2007. His scientific interests include the role of&nbsp;<em>Aeromonashydrophila<\/em>enterotoxins&nbsp;in the pathogenesis of disease and the development of vaccines against this pathogen.
