L Gaudreau<\/strong>\u00a0enabled UMES a year ago to launch a political internship program. Program coordinator\u00a0<strong>Kathryn Barrett-Gaines<\/strong>, a history professor, said the two UMES students selected as interns in 2010 had a positive experience so she recruited three new participants this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"116\" height=\"123\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image00173.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3075\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criminal justice major\u00a0<strong>Phylicia Henry<\/strong>, a senior from Largo, will work for Del.\u00a0Melony\u00a0G. Griffith, District 25 (Prince George&#8217;s County).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"114\" height=\"118\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image00174.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3076\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History major\u00a0<strong>Clifford Glover<\/strong>, a junior from Silver Spring, will work for Del.\u00a0Luiz\u00a0Simmons, District 17 (Montgomery\u00a0County).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"111\" height=\"117\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/image00268.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3079\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criminal justice major&nbsp;<strong>Sade Parker<\/strong>, a senior from Upper Marlboro, will work for&nbsp;Sheila E. Hixson, District 20 (Montgomery County).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gaudreau&#8217;s&nbsp;gift is used for stipends to help the interns pay expenses while living in the Annapolis area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henry says she has long been interested in the issue of human trafficking and pursued a legislative internship hopeful it would be a way for her to study up-close how public policy is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think I would like to work for the United Nations, or an international agency that combats that problem,&#8221; Henry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glover, an honors student, said &#8220;I&#8217;m interested in all the fields of law.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s also been selected to participate in the &#8220;Baltimore Scholars Program,&#8221; a law school &#8220;boot camp&#8221; for undergraduates considering a career in law. He&#8217;s hopeful the experience will enable him to earn a high enough score on the law school entrance exam to qualify for a full scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I have a passion \u2026 a desire to make things better, and to help people,&#8221; Glover said. &#8220;I think a good lawyer can do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going to law school also might&nbsp; be&nbsp;in Parker&#8217;s future&nbsp;somedayand&nbsp;she saw working alongside legislators as a way &#8220;to gain a better idea of what I would like to do with my future \u2026 and possible career choices.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I need some guidance before I take the next step,&#8221; Parker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gaudreau was inspired to make the donation after learning UMES has no political-science degree program. &#8220;I thought a good way to generate interest in political careers would be through a political internship program,&#8221; he said, adding he remains hopeful a political science major might someday be added to the curriculum at the historically black institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES students will work as full-time office staffers, conduct research directed by Barrett-Gaines, keep a journal recording their experiences and write reports.
