{"id":2907,"date":"2012-07-27T14:59:34","date_gmt":"2012-07-27T18:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/pr\/?p=2907"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:04:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T02:04:55","slug":"epa-announces-new-support-for-coastal-bays-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/epa-announces-new-support-for-coastal-bays-work\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA announces new support for Coastal Bays work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/EPA.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/EPA.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/EPA-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/EPA-200x200.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/scm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2021\/09\/EPA-50x50.jpeg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday, July 27, 2012<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00a0Consortium\u00a0awarded federal environmental agency grant\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PHILADELPHIA -(July 27, 2012) &#8211; The Maryland Coastal Bays Program received $173,400 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today to underwrite training and instruction that exposes high school and college students from Maryland&#8217;s Eastern Shore to best ecological practices and career options in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grant will&nbsp;ongoing educational, research and career-related activities focusing on marine and science programs, internships, environmental stewardship and utilizing green infrastructure such as wind turbines, rain collection systems and nurturing natural shorelines.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EPA&#8217;s funding now tops $600,000 for this ongoing initiative, which includes&nbsp;<strong>University of Maryland Eastern Shore<\/strong>&nbsp;students involved in the Coastal Stewards program as well as&nbsp;high-school age participants in Upward Bound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Many of our Coastal Stewards are UMES students and work with us in paid positions,&#8221; according to&nbsp;Carrie Samis, education coordinator for the Coastal Bays Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES and the Coastal Bays Program signed an agreement in 2006 to work jointly on educational activities known collectively as&nbsp;Linking Environmental and Academic Programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shawn M. Garvin, an EPA Regional Administrator, presented a check to the Coastal Bays Program during the first day of its &#8220;Get Out, Get Green, Get Paid&#8221; youth summit in Ocean City, Md.<br><br>&#8220;This initiative creates new opportunities for students to pursue environmental careers that make the world a better place,&#8221; Garvin said. &#8220;These programs not only expand the conversation on environmentalism, they empower young people to achieve their dreams.&#8221;<br><br>The federal agency is a partner with UMES, Maryland&#8217;s Department of the Environment and Department of Natural Resources, and the Maryland Coastal Bays Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Several of the students who have been involved in our programs have secured jobs with the National Park Service, Maryland State Parks and job corps programs after working with us,&#8221; Samis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program&#8217;s objectives are:&nbsp;x<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Increasing minority participation in environmental science and related fields;<\/li><li>Restoring Maryland&#8217;s Coastal Bays;<\/li><li>Promoting an environmental stewardship ethic at all educational levels;<\/li><li>Performing sound research; and<\/li><li>Fulfilling goals of the Coastal Bays&#8217; Program.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The summit attracted young people ranging in age from 14-to-25, including students from UMES, Upward Bound, Coastal Stewards, Youth Conservation Corps, Maryland Conservation Job Corps and other organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event exposes participants to the importance of getting outside and taking steps to reduce pollution and energy use as well as career opportunities for &#8220;green&#8221; jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants heard from visionaries who brought change to their communities, their workplace, their lives and beyond by pursuing an interest in finding ways to protect and preserve the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Information courtesy of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday, July 27, 2012 \u00a0Consortium\u00a0awarded federal environmental agency grant\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PHILADELPHIA -(July 27, 2012) &#8211; The Maryland Coastal Bays Program received $173,400 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today to underwrite training and instruction that exposes high school and college students from Maryland&#8217;s Eastern Shore to best ecological practices and career options in the field.
