Awusabo-Asare is an associate professor in geography at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana.

As Bernstein Visiting Professor, Awusabo-Asare is helping to promote international education for the University. Awusabo-Asare is leading two major studies related to public health and family life in Ghana. In the first, sponsored by the Guttmacher Institute, he is researching how young people in Ghana are dealing with sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS. Awusabo-Asare plans to conduct similar research in the U.S. during his tenure here.

His other major research project examines health issues in Ghanaian households, particularly as they relate to water quality.

Established by Richard A. Bernstein, president and CEO of BAI Aerosystems, Inc. in Easton, MD, the Richard A. Bernstein Fund promotes excellence and encourages outstanding performance among UMES students and faculty. BAI is a manufacturer of lightweight, low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles used by the military for a variety of operations, and Bernstein has been credited with bringing the world of high technology to Maryland’s eastern shore.

###

Maureen McNeill, UMES Office of Public Relations, 410-651-7580, memcneill@umes.edu.

Contact: Dr. Kathryn Barrett-Gaines, director, African and African American History, 410-651-7934, kbgaines@umes.edu.

Wednesday, March 7, 2007 PRINCESS ANNE, MD -The Richard A.
